This post shall be my last post before the hiatus for my exam. Don’t miss me too much kay?

This post is also my maiden review of Korean Pop music. I am not that learnt about music, but will try my best to give my two cents worth. (:

Background
The first teaser video, featuring KAI dancing in front of a black automobile was uploaded onto Youtube two days before Christmas (23 December 2011). The description of the teaser reads

On Dec. 23rd, the world of new boy band EXO-K and EXO-M presented by S.M.Entertainment will be opened! The entire world is watching them! Stay tuned!EXO-K and EXO-M are new boy groups who will lead the world music industry from now on! They are making their debut on the same day and time with the same song in Korea and China. Since it's something that has never been tried before, it will be good enough to capture the attention of fans not only in Korea and China but all over the world.

Seems like EXO’s lucky number is 2 & 3. Before their debut, they have 23 teasers. They are spilt into 2 groups – EXO-K and EXO-M having songs sang in 2 languages – Korean and Chinese.

Each group have 6 members, so in total 12 members!

EXO-M – Kris, Chen, Tao, Xiumin, Lay, Luhan

The last member to be introduced was EXO-K’s Chanyeol on 23 February.

Their debut was on 8 April, 2012 at both Korea (EXO-K) and China (EXO-M).

After those quick facts, time for the new mini album!

  1. MAMA
  2. What Is Love

  4. 너의 세상으로 (Angel)
  5. 두개의 달이 뜨는 밤 (Two Moons) (feat.SHINee's Key)
  6. MACHINE
Chinese Version
  1. MAMA
  2. What Is Love
  3. History
  4. 你的世界 (Angel)
  5. 双月之夜 (Two Moons) (feat.SHINee's Key)
  6. MACHINE

1. MAMA

MAMA, being the title song, is first on the track list. “Careless Careless, shoot anonymous anonymous. Heartless mindless, no one, who care about me.”, it starts with a chant that repeats itself in various part of the song. The electronic dance song is coupled with vocals making it very catchy. The violin/ notes used in the music gives the classy and impending danger feel. First released on EXO showcase in Korea.

2. What is Love
The prologue single of EXO is one of the ballads in this album. Repeated beats are used in this song. It is not as fast paced as MAMA, showing the more gentle side of the singers. This song is a good showcase of the vocals of the boys.

3. History
The second prologue single is a fast paced song like MAMA. This is however, a livelier dance song probably due to the absence of the violin parts in MAMA. The "uh oh uh oh" keeps you hooked to the song.

There are no MVs on their official Youtube channels for the following songs.

4. Into your world (Angel)
Into your world is the other ballad in the album. The song is generally bright and cheerful. Although short, the three minutes song is well written and worth listening at lonely nights. I am a sucker for piano song and fell in love with this song within the first three seconds.

5. Two Moons
Hip hop song featuring SHINee’s Key rapping. Repeated and catchy lyrics, is one reason that you will like this song. “Two moons” is repeated throughout the song, lest you forget what song is this, haha.

6. Machine
The last song of the album is another dance song. There are upbeat and slower parts. This song is talking about a girl who feels like a machine.

The album in whole:

The album is a showcase of the powerful vocals and energetic yet tender/ softer side of EXO. Thumbs up for the dance songs, and the inclusion of two ballads to balance the album. It started the new boyband off on a good note and leave fans craving for more.
